Last weekend Alex and I took The Bothered Owl to the London Entertainment and Film Show which was being held at Kensington Olympia. Rather than do this blog post on how we went at the show, I thought that I would write more about some of the shenanigans that go on at these shows.
Firstly there are a number of guests, some of the names I know like Cary Elwes, Chris Judge, Mercedes McNab, Paul Goddard and David Franklin to name just a few. Guests sign autographs, give talks and there is also the opportunity for photo sessions. At a previous show I got the autographs of Ben Browder from Farscape and Andrew Robinson from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. At this show I was thinking of getting Armin Shimerman’s but unfortunately he wasn’t able to make it. Since Alex and I are moving home next year, I am not looking to acquire too much in the way of ‘stuff’ so unless I really want a signed autograph I am not going to get it. If I hadn’t been moving home I would have gotten 2 or 3.
There are also characters who dress up as storm troopers etc. raising money for charity. The people who were raising money for charity were Star Warriors and they raise money for some excellent causes.
There are also people who dress up and perform cosplay, people obviously put a lot of time and effort into their costumes. There are sometimes Cosplay competitions at these events and I am sure many other activities but it is not an activity that I have tried.
Finally there are the dealers of which we were one obviously and so was our friend Coucou Heart. There are people selling, DVD’s, graphic novels and comics, collectibles, t-shirts, jewellery and all sorts of other collectibles. It is a really enjoyable wandering around doing a little bit of people watching, meeting celebrities and listening to the talks. We did some shopping, bought some Whedon graphic novels and a t-shirt inspired by a general love of zombies.
Since the show there has been lots of snow and though lots of places in the world get heavy snowfall for London this is not the usual occurence and we have been joined in keeping warm by the landlords cat who usually lives in the back garden that we share with the landlord.
