Next stop on the rolling juggernaut that is the Summer Market Round-up is a new one for us: Clapton Festival

This Saturday Alex and Scott will be heading off bright and early to Clapton to tout our shiny goods to the lovely folk attending Clapton Festival Market.

We just got sent through a flyer for the event and it looks utterly amazing.

And that’s just the first page! There’ll be food – LOADS of fantastic looking cakes and plenty of options for veggies and vegans (not that I am in ANY way biased!) There’ll be vintage stalls, accessories, crafts people, local information stalls and lots of stuff for the mini people to do as well. Plus there’s a classical music concert in St John’s and a dub reggae gig in the Round Chapel nearby. All in all it looks fairly darn fabulous.

If you’re thinking of heading along, it gets started at 12 and runs until around 4pm, in the gardens of St John-at Hackney Church. There’s a google map here.

If you do decide to swing by and spend your afternoon browsing the fabulousness, make sure you go and say hello to Alex and Scott!

Brockley to the Max June 5, 2011

This is the second year in a row that we’ve taken part in Brockley Max as vendors. This year was a little different, in that Alex and Scott did all the work and I spent the afternoon wandering around after the kids and taking in the atmosphere.

A very cute, napping, impediment to ever getting anything done!

Elias makes it a little awkward to work on the stall so instead I got to take lots of pictures and soak up the sunshine.

Bibs and purses looking purty in the sunshine

Hats galore

The stall looked beautiful, set up under some trees to take advantage of the shade. It gets pretty hot up there on the top of the hill but the trees by the stone circle make the perfect spot to lay out a stand. Unfortunately the hats didn’t stay out too long as there was a hefty wind that made things a leetle difficult, but they did look lovely in the sunshine.

Beautiful brightly coloured cufflinks

We had our usual array of Lego finery on display. I really like what Alex has done with the backing cloth for the stall. She found a load of lovely crushed velvet/velveteen in one of the local fabric shops and it makes a great background for the Lego in particular. I think the dark background really makes the colours POP!

Our new jewellery stands

Lovely organic design jewellery tree

We were also trying out these gorgeous new stands that Alex found. Aren’t they great? A really lovely organic shape to them.

I also got to chat a bit to some of the other stall holders which was lovely. Normally when we’re working on a market there’s fairly limited opportunities to actually get to check out other peoples’ work.

Thai massage in the open air

Brightly coloured dresses and lovely local photos

Two stalls in particular caught my eye and I took the chance to have a chat with the owners about their work.

First up was the stall next to us, run by Pinky Sidhu. Like us, Pinky’s a knitter, but she works with wire and beads, including precious stones.

A really creative way of displaying some thoroughly beautiful jewellery

I’m totally fascinated by knitting with wire so it was interesting to chat with Pinky about what she does. She said the most common question she gets is about what type of stitches she uses to create the ‘fabric’.  No matter what stitch you use, it ends up looking the same.

So tactile.

I particularly love the lapis lazuli earrings.

I love the airiness and illusion of fragility created by the space between the stitches.

The other stall that really captured me was run by a lovely gentleman called Phoesbus Apostolides. Phoebus is a photographer but he also makes lovely fine silver jewellery.

Beautiful glass earrings. I love the silver knots above the beads.

Fabulous curves

This pair were my favourite. I love the combination of the bell shape with those long sinuous curves. I’d feel like a temple priestess strutting around with them hanging from my ears!

Phoebus works with a type of clay called precious metal clay. He molds it to the precise shape he wants, then bakes it in a kiln. Once hardened it becomes silver. He also works with a gold version as well, which he applies over the top of the silver clay to add a touch of additional colour.

A lovely ring

Unlike gold leaf, the gold PMC won’t wear away because it’s baked into the other clay. I rally loved Phoebus’ work and again it’s so interesting to get to speak to the craft person about what they do and hear how passionate they are about it.

The rest of my afternoon was spent like this:

Balloon swords for the win!

Orlaith enjoying the company of a charming local fire officer.

Esme was slightly bemused by the whole experience.

The main event of the afternoon for both of them was the craft tent. Last year they were both a bit too young to really get into it but this year was crafty bliss for them.

Completely focussed on their work

Adding some embellishments

Esme said she was painting a picture of the Tsunami. Or as she pronounces it 'the Salami'.

It's all fun and games...

And there you have it. There was also music, food, cider, large amounts of bubble blowing and some hunting for lions in the long grass at the bottom of the stone circle. And lots of people enjoying the sunshine and hanging out in the park. A fine end to Brockley Max for this year, I think.

As for Elias, he napped through the whole thing but seemed pretty pleased with the experience.

Two very enthusiastically and uncontrollably waving thumbs up from the youngest owlet

Brockley Max Art in the Park June 2, 2011

Filed under: markets — thebotheredowl @ 9:01 pm

This Saturday is Brockley Max’s Art in the Park. It will be held in Hilly Fields near the stone circle. This will be the second year that we will be at this event. Last year was a lovely day sitting in the sunshine listening to some excellent music and selling our wares.  This year promises to be just as much fun and and we’ll be there from 12-5pm.

Last Year's Stall

There are a number of activities happening in Hilly Fields, details available by clicking here. Also on there are details of all the activities happening during the Brockley Max Festival.

Hope you can join us.

The Bothered Owl attended Wonderwool Wales for the very first time this year. Held in Builth Wells, it was the third year that the show had run, and this year was the biggest yet.

The show took place at the Royal Welsh Showground,in a very large shed. We were amazingly lucky with the weather, and had glorious sunshine and blue skies.

Scott and I left for Wales a day early, so we could be tourists. We headed to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. It had been on my to see list for a while, and with our hire car, it was an easy detour.

We also checked out Beaumaris Castle, the Menai Strait, and Caernarfon Castle. Scott and I had a lovely time being tourists on our way to Wonderwool Wales. The calm before the storm!

We arrived in Builth Wells after a long drive from Caernarfon in the late afternoon. We unloaded and began to set up.

We had a corner stall

Saturday was a super busy day. We had a lovely day chatting to customers, selling loads of fabric envelopes, bags and of course stitch markers, and enjoying the atmosphere.

Sunday was quieter. We rearranged the layout of the stall so we had the two tables in an L-shape. This seemed to work better. We both wandered around to see what else there was on offer. There was an amazing range of fibre, yarn, and notions on offer. From Manx Loaghtan sheep to Angora bunnies, there really was something for everyone !

Thank you to everyone who came to our stall to shop, to chat and to browse.

Unravel March 3, 2011

The weekend of February 26th and 27th saw Scott and I heading to Surrey for the annual wool festival that is Unravel. This was the third year that it was held, and it was the biggest and best yet.

Saturday morning we were up before dawn to be on the first train out of our local station. We are lucky that we can fit everything we need for a two day show into two large suitcases.

We arrived at Farnham Maltings just after 8am to set up our stall. We were guided to the front door by knitted arrows, and other knitting decorations hanging in trees, off fence posts and decorating the lawn outside the building. Even the staff had knitted name badges. This motorcycle caught my eye and was just as you walked into the main entrance.

We had our stall set up on time and ready for the doors to open at 10am.

All set up & ready to go

The weekend was a busy one. Saturday was busier than Sunday.

The lovely thing about doing shows is meeting people who have bought things from you before, people you interact with on Twitter, and people who read your blog. And there are of course those who have never heard about you before.

And now that we’ve done a few of these shows, we have made friends with some of the other vendors too. It’s always good to catch up with them as well.

Martina from Yarn to Knit

Easyknits Stall

Not only do we catch up with people that we have previouslymet, but we also meet new people. In the hotel we were staying in on the Saturday night, while we were ordering a cab at breakfast, Michelle and Rob Green offered to give us a lift to Farnham Maltings. Talking to them over breakfast we found out that this was their first yarn show. We really appreciated the lift and they were really interesting to chat to as they do a lot more than just yarn.

Not only did they have a lovely stall but Michelle won best in show with this amazing crocheted tea cosy. The other items in the room were all lovely and made with such care and expertise. If you click on the photos you will get a larger image and will be able to appreciate the detail. The theme is Temptation – Eve is tempting Adam with a cup of tea!

At this show we unveiled a range of new stitch markers made of fimo which look like food – cake, fruit, cookies etc – and these were a big hit. Lots of people picked them up and gave us lots of compliments.

We also decided to have a tray with the crochet markers. This show we were organised enough to have these labelled, and this made a significant difference to the number of people looking at them. At our next show Wonderwool Wales we will have a similar tray or two well labelled and also another one for sock/lace markers which will have smaller rings for thinner needles.

Hope to see you at Wonderwool Wales.

Unravel Preview February 25, 2011

We’re off at dawn tomorrow to the fabulous Unravel event, at Farnham Maltings, Farnham, Surrey. It’s going to be a great weekend, and Scott and I are really looking forward to taking The Bothered Owl out of London again.

Here’s a preview of the pouches we’ll have on offer this weekend. I’m really excited about these, as this is the first show that I’ve done a lot of sewing for. So items that I’ve made, and am proud of, will be for sale!

As well as the lovely fabric items, there will of course be our stitch markers. The Lego markers, and we shall be introducing some new markers as well.

We’ll also be offering a show special on our wide needle envelopes. These normally sell for £13. We’re selling them this weekend for £8. Get ’em while you can! 🙂

Christmas Market roundup December 8, 2010

Okay, okay, it’s not a post with photos of the Yarn Party. Soon, I promise, my pretties, sooon. We’re still rounding up photos and all that sort of gubbins.

But I just wanted to let you know of a couple of Christmas markets we’re doing this week. They’ll most likely be our last ones for the year as we’re all exhausted!

First stop on the Christmas market juggernaut isThe Museum of London, Docklands. Alex used to work there, it’s a fab museum with some great exhibits and they’re holding a Fair there tomorrow evening. We did last year’s Museum of London Fair and it was a hoot so we signed up for this one. If it’s anything like last year, it should be great fun. Christmas carols, loads of great makers’ stalls and best of all a museum to have a look through. All details on the link.

Then this weekend we are dividing and conquering on a local scale as we hit both the Brockley and Ladywell Christmas Markets. We did these last year as well and they are such lovely events. Alex has been helping to organise the Ladywell one this year so she and Scott will be shivering by Ladywell Station, drinking mulled wine and enjoying the atmosphere. Whilst I shall be hauling my butt to Brockley to stand in the street as a purveyor of fine handcrafted wotnots for your Christmas purchasing.

We’ll have a wide range of stuff, as always, including some of the new lavender sachets we’ve been working on. Who says practical objects can’t be pretty? Ours are made with offcuts of the fabrics we use in all our other designs and we think they are rather fun. Plus, Alex found a really good lavender supplier so they smell absolutely divine – as long as you’re not a moth.

Details, details:

11th December 2010 – 10am-4pm

As usual we’d love to see you, if you’re in the area. If there’s something particular you’d like us to make up for you, why not let us know ahead of schedule and we can have it tucked away somewhere on the stall for you!

And that concludes this little public service announcement. The small child juggernaut rolls on too and I need to go bathe two paint covered miscreants who’ve been making a pirate island out of half of the mince pie box from the other night. Photos of their amazing creations later.

Last weekend Alex and I took The Bothered Owl to the London Entertainment and Film Show which was being held at Kensington Olympia. Rather than do this blog post on how we went at the show, I thought that I would write more about some of the shenanigans that go on at these shows.

Firstly there are a number of guests, some of the names I know like Cary Elwes, Chris Judge, Mercedes McNab, Paul Goddard and David Franklin to name just a few. Guests sign autographs, give talks and there is also the opportunity for photo sessions. At a previous show I got the autographs of Ben Browder from Farscape and Andrew Robinson from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. At this show I was thinking of getting Armin Shimerman’s but unfortunately he wasn’t able to make it. Since Alex and I are moving home next year, I am not looking to acquire too much in the way of ‘stuff’ so unless I really want a signed autograph I am not going to get it. If I hadn’t been moving home I would have gotten 2 or 3.

Alice Krige from Dune and Star Trek

There are also characters who dress up as storm troopers etc. raising money for charity. The people who were raising money for charity were Star Warriors and they raise money for some excellent causes.

There are also people who dress up and perform cosplay, people obviously put a lot of time and effort into their costumes. There are sometimes Cosplay competitions at these events and I am sure many other activities but it is not an activity that I have tried.

Finally there are the dealers of which we were one obviously and so was our friend Coucou Heart. There are people selling, DVD’s, graphic novels and comics, collectibles, t-shirts, jewellery and all sorts of other collectibles. It is a really enjoyable wandering around doing a little bit of people watching, meeting celebrities and listening to the talks. We did some shopping, bought some Whedon graphic novels and a t-shirt inspired by a general love of zombies.

Since the show there has been lots of snow and though lots of places in the world get heavy snowfall for London this is not the usual occurence and we have been joined in keeping warm by the landlords cat who usually lives in the back garden that we share with the landlord.

Our table all ready for the crowds

Alex and I will be there on both Saturday and Sunday selling our items and chatting to people.

Star Wars centre piece

We may even do a little shopping of our own as there is a new Firefly graphic novel out that both Alex and I wasnt to read and I am also hope to get Space: Above and Beyond which was filmed on the Gold Coast but I have never found a copy of the DVD.

Cardholders - They are a new item

For those who may want to come to the yarn party we will be selling tickets and once this weekend is over we will be emailing both vendors and attendees with much fuller information.
